Therapy is a term used to refer to types of talking therapy, or psychotherapy, that are often attended by people who are struggling with some sort of emotional disturbance that is causing them distress. This person might feel distressed simply because of the pain their feelings are causing them or because these painful feelings are compelling them to behave in ways that are disrupting their life.
There are different types of therapy. Some therapies intend to help by encouraging the person to problem solve their distress in a way to promote changes in their behaviour which might offer relief. Other therapies intend to help by inviting the person to give expression to, reflect on and develop insight into how they are feeling in a way to promote change in their personality and cultivate more of a sense of freedom.

As well as a clinical psychologist, I am a psychodynamic practitioner, psychodynamic therapy being one of the latter of these two types of therapy. It is a flexible approach suited to treating different kinds of mental health problems by attending to the painful feelings that often underlie these conditions. And it is an approach that acknowledges that painful feelings are not exclusive to those suffering mental health problems. Many people choose to attend psychodynamic therapy simply with the intention of understanding themselves more fully.

Central to a psychodynamic therapy is an exploration of the person's feelings as they occur, and as they have occurred, in relationships. What this means for the therapy itself is that I will invite you to reflect on your feelings as they emerge in the therapy, noticing if and how these are similar to patterns that emerge in your relationships elsewhere. This can feel unusual, and might require you to sit with discomfort at times, but often provides valuable insight and can make for a profoundly therapeutic experience.

I offer individual therapy to adults. Therapy can be carried out online, over the phone, or in person, depending on your preference. The sessions will occur once a week and last for 50 minutes. I can offer brief interventions (3-6 months) that are more focused on a single issue, or longer interventions (~ 12 months) that intend to explore more of your personality. Before starting therapy I will invite you to speak with me over the phone for a consultation, to decide on what is most appropriate. I am only able to provide sessions in English.

My priority for your therapy will be to carry it out in a way to maximise its therapeutic potential, which means attending to your comfort and safety first and foremost. My practice adheres to the ethical standards of conduct outlined by the HCPC and places importance on confidentiality, submitting to general data protection regulations. Choosing to attend therapy is to make a significant financial and emotional investment. I intend to respect that by conducting myself professionally should you choose to meet with me, or by making recommendations for you to meet with another professional should I think that your needs could be better met elsewhere.
